Shrinklady's Bio
Dr. Seifert, AKA “The Shrinklady”, a forty-something Midwesterner
married to the most tolerant man in the world for 20 years, is the
mother of two teenagers. When she's not busy stamping out mental
illness, she enjoys writing, making theatrical costumes, and reading
mysteries with her Yorkshire terrier settled on her lap. Her home-made
soups are to die for.
Due to the strong competitive streak she had at age 17, she wound
up attending a 6 year combined undergraduate/medical program. In
the library of her St. Louis area high school, two cocky male classmates
boasted about their applications to UMKC School of Medicine with
the intent of starting medical school two months after graduation.
The idea of becoming a physician hadn't really crossed her mind until
that time, but she thought, “ I'm smarter than these guys. Wouldn't
it be funny if I got in and they didn't?” That's just what happened.
(Hi to Tim and Paul, wherever you are.)
In medical school, she enjoyed talking with patients more than poking
and prodding them, so she entered psychiatric training and completed
the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry in 1989. She was board certified
in general psychiatry in 1991 and has practiced in a wide variety
of settings over the past 16 years. Her preference is to be an independent
contractor dividing her time among several agencies; this allows
her to maintain control over her schedule and the standard of care
upon which she insists.
Having realized that she can't eradicate mental illness in the world
all by herself, she wrote this book. It is her fervent hope that
you get a few laughs while you learn.
